The story takes place in Shanghai in 1985. Just as Sun Yuxin (played by Ju Xue) is about to report to Peking University, her mother suddenly passes away in a car accident, leaving behind three underage siblings, all of whom are the descendants of prisoners her mother adopted while working as a prison guard. Yuxin gives up on her university plans and works to support her three non-biological siblings, during which she has a brief marriage. Ten years later, her siblings grow up one after another, and Yuxin is considering whether to marry her high school classmate Dashu (played by Dong Yong), who has always been there for her but remains unmarried. Tian Feng (played by Wang Tonghui), who took the entrance exam for Peking University with her, returns from overseas and learns about the difficulties Yuxin has faced over the years. He helps Yuxin bring the "Tree of Family" series of clothing to market.
