The story takes place in ancient Thebes, after King Oedipus killed his father and married his mother. He had two sons—Eteocles and Polynices—and two daughters—Antigone (played by Irene Papas) and Ismene. Polynices returns to claim the throne from his brother Eteocles with the help of his father-in-law's army, resulting in the brothers killing each other. Creon, as their uncle, inherits the throne. He holds a grand funeral for Eteocles and declares Polynices a traitor, forbidding anyone to bury his body. Creon orders that anyone who buries Polynices will be put to death. Antigone, following divine law, fulfills her familial duty by burying her brother, for which she is sentenced to death by Creon. Later, a prophet informs Creon that he has offended the gods. Creon rushes to save Antigone, only to find that she has already died. Creon's son Haemon, who is Antigone's fiancé, kills Creon and then takes his own life. When Creon's wife hears of their son's death, she also commits suicide. In the end, Creon is left as a tragic figure, completely alone.
