Since the Yongzheng era of the Qing Dynasty, the Le family’s old store, Tongrentang, has been designated as "Imperial Medicine Supplier," and by the eighth generation of the Le family, it has gained tremendous fame. Patients from far and wide seek their medicines, while the Japanese ronin Ono colludes with Cao Hualun, who grew up in the Le family, plotting to steal the secret prescription. Cao Hualun's theft is discovered by Lao Dongjia Le Hongda, who confronts him. In a fit of rage, Cao Hualun commits arson and destroys the Le family's fine herbs store, collaborating with a eunuch from the Imperial Pharmacy to seize the imperial medicine silver, which further worsens the old store's situation, leaving them without money to produce medicines or items to sell. The prince mistakenly believes the Le family is "deceiving" him, and in anger, orders the revocation of their status as imperial medicine suppliers, initiating a new bidding process. Faced with difficulties both internal and external, Le Hongda decides to pass the family seal to his grandson, Le Hongda, in order to preserve the two-century-old brand. Le Hongda takes on the responsibility in a time of crisis, and with the help of his wife, Xu Ruizhen, he successfully regains the status of imperial medicine supplier through impressive efforts. He receives an imperial plaque from Emperor Guangxu. Cao Hualun again incites the prince to order the old store not to sell medicines to the public, only supplying the court. Le Hongda realizes that “advancement leads to the role of a good minister, while retreat leads to the role of a good doctor,” and decides to “defy the orders” to sell medicines. Le Hongda strongly assists his grandson, taking advantage of the illness of Chief Steward Li Lianying to produce a miraculous medicine that saves lives. Finally, the Empress Dowager relaxes the ban. The courtesan Cong Yuzhu, who was taken in by the Le family in Beijing, secretly loves Le Hongda, but to rescue Le Hongda from prison, she sacrifices herself by marrying Cao Hualun. During the First Sino-Japanese War, the Qing army goes to Korea to resist the enemy. Le Hongda hastily prepares one hundred thousand packs of "Zhuge's Marching Powder" as gifts for the soldiers, but materials merchants take the opportunity to raise prices, leaving him in debt. As the New Year approaches, creditors begin to demand repayments, and with no way to borrow, Le Hongda is forced to sell the family home. The merchants, upon learning the reason for the gift of medicine, generously relinquish their claims on the debt, giving the old store another chance at survival. The father of the maid Lanxiang, Hu Qi, narrowly escapes death following wrongful accusations. The Le family protects Hu Qi but is betrayed by Cao Hualun. Le Hongda takes Lanxiang as his adopted granddaughter. Under Xu Ruizhen’s matchmaking, Lanxiang and Le Hongda eventually marry happily. When the Eight-Nation Alliance bombs Dashilar, the old store is set ablaze. Le Hongda orders Le Hongda and Xu Ruizhen to accompany the pregnant Lanxiang to escape the city to preserve the Le family’s lineage. Ono leads the Japanese soldiers to barge into the Le family to search for the secret formulas. Le Hongda (likely should be Le Kuohai) retaliates with poisoned wine, causing mutual destruction. Le Hongda sneaks back into Beijing, filled with despair. He finds the secret prescriptions treasured by his grandfather and hides them in Le Hongda's coffin. Cao Hualun, suspicious, comes to open the coffin at night, only to be scared to death by a scheme devised by Xu Ruizhen and the adopted actress Xiang Jiuxiao. The old store reopens from the ruins, but Le Hongda, having endured suffering, passes away. In his final moments, it coincides with the first birthday celebration of his son, Le Tongren, during which he grabs items from a table filled with official hats, gold ingots, brushes, and silk, but instead, little Tongren picks up the "Tongrentang Pharmacopoeia"…
