The story takes place in a girls' boarding school known for its notoriously strict rules. All teachers and students live under the authoritarian rule of the principal, with no room for complaint. Only the female teacher, Fräulein von Bernburg (played by Dorothea Wieck), is different from the others. Gentle and kind, she firmly believes that only patience and love can teach these girls what truly matters in life; as a result, she is very popular among the students. Among them is a girl named Manuela (played by Hertha Thiele), who has a particular admiration for Fräulein von Bernburg. Gradually, the feelings between them surpass the boundaries of teacher-student affection and spiral out of control. During the celebration of a drama festival, fueled by alcohol, Manuela confesses her feelings for Fräulein von Bernburg, only to be overheard by the principal passing by. The principal views this rebellious act as a sickness and locks Manuela in the infirmary.
