Late in his career, Visconti favored stories centered around the conflicts within noble families, having himself been born into one. This film is part of that theme, yet it is one of his least known works. His longtime collaborator Lancaster plays an American retired professor living in a luxurious apartment in Rome who collects paintings. Through his perspective, the film examines various situations within a noble family that has moved into the artist's building. The family is rife with hidden decadence, hatred, and jealousy, leading to irreconcilable conflicts with the old professor, which drives him into madness and chaos.
