In the late 1980s, Shuitu Town in Beibei was a poor rural town primarily based on agriculture. In order to become prosperous, village officials actively sought changes in the rural industrial structure. With government support, they transformed the agriculture-focused industry into one centered on fisheries, which caused a huge stir among the villagers. There were two wealthy families in the village, one surnamed Du and the other Li. The Du family was a distant relative of the Qing Dynasty emperor. To allow Emperor Guangxu to escape the summer heat, they built a summer villa in Yangliu Village, named Du Family Courtyard. The Li family, a prominent local clan, also built a large courtyard directly opposite the Du family to compete, naming it Li Family Courtyard. Du's clan, and the long-lived county magistrate Du Boqing, commemorated his mother by remaining widowed for over forty years, demonstrating loyalty and filial piety while raising his children. He petitioned Emperor Guangxu to build a memorial arch in the village, which the emperor approved after being moved by his story. Consequently, a memorial arch symbolizing fidelity and filial piety was erected at the village entrance (this arch remains intact to this day, praised as "the first archway in East Sichuan" for its exquisite construction and unique design). The Li family felt that the arch affected their feng shui, so they dug a large pond in front of their courtyard to counteract the Du family. The pond, with its rippling water, resembled a large mirror facing the Du household. From then on, a feud developed between the two families, continuing to this day. During the reforms in Yangliu Village at the end of the 1980s, the two families had very different attitudes: the Du family actively supported the changes while the Li family became “nail households” (stubborn opponents of reforms). However, seeing the benefits the Du family gained, the Li family later sought to join in the reforms. Meanwhile, both prominent households had their unique quirks, such as a "hard to deal with" domineering matriarch in the Li family and several generations of son-in-laws in the Du family. Under the growing tensions between the two large households, as the village became wealthier and even garnered a reputation as one of the top ten new rural communities in the country, they eventually shook hands and reconciled their long-standing grievances, turning foes into in-laws…
