In the late stages of the Anti-Japanese War, in the wartime capital of Chongqing, the freedom-loving Wang Wenxuan (played by Xu Huanshan) disregards his family's objections and cohabits with his classmate Zeng Shusheng (played by Pan Hong). After entering society, he realizes that there is a vast difference between ideals and reality, ultimately becoming a small clerk who endures humiliation for a meager existence. His wife Shusheng is dissatisfied with their poverty and, utilizing her looks, secures a "vase" position at a bank to help support the family. Wang's mother (played by Lin Moyu) disapproves of Shusheng's behavior and often chastises her for "not being formally married." The bank's generous salary makes Shusheng reluctant to return to their impoverished life, and eventually, she relocates to Lanzhou with her young superior, Director Chen (played by Gao Fei). In a foreign land, Shusheng constantly misses her husband and son in Chongqing. After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, she returns to Chongqing, only to discover that Wenxuan has died from poverty and illness just days earlier... This film is adapted from Ba Jin's novel of the same name.
