The story takes place in a religious community in northern Mexico, where the residents are extremely devout believers, strictly following the Lord's guidance and constantly remembering the teachings in every word and action. John (played by Cornelio Wall) and his wife Esther (played by Miriam Toews) are residents of this place. They have been married for many years and live peacefully and happily in a beautiful countryside setting. However, a storm is brewing fiercely beneath the calm facade; John has fallen in love with a woman named Marianne (played by Maria Pankratz). The two often meet in secret, enjoying the pleasures of both spirit and flesh.
