The play "The Book" uses the life of the famous Northern Song lyricist Liu Sanbian (Liu Yong) as its narrative thread, showcasing a thrilling political struggle that concerns the destiny of the nation and its people during the early Song Dynasty. In the early Song, the situation was slightly stable, but the Western Xia frequently invaded the borders, and the remnant of Southern Tang took advantage of Liu Sanbian as the figure of the former ruler to attempt a restoration. The once peaceful lives of the common people faced the threat of war again. Liu Sanbian, talented in both literature and martial arts, possessed a heart that cared for the country and the people. He understood that once war broke out, the common people would suffer greatly. Seeing the Song prince dedicated to governance, leading the nation toward stability and prosperity, he resolutely gave up the best chance for restoration, opting instead to assist the Song dynasty in quelling the Western Xia rebellion and guiding the country and its people onto the path of peace and prosperity. Liu Yong yearned for a passionate and free life, cared for the lower classes, and especially sympathized with the insulted and mistreated courtesans. Writing lyrics for courtesans was both a necessity of life and an expression of his free spirit, shining with the brilliance of freedom and humanity. Under the thousands of years of feudal rule in China, Liu Yong was consistently marginalized by orthodox literati and struggled to find a place in mainstream culture; he does not even have a biography in "The History of Song." The play fully showcases and praises Liu Sanbian's poetry and life, demonstrating the most exquisite and progressive cultural essence of Chinese traditional culture to the world.
