During the Anti-Japanese War, in Liu Jia Jiao Village of a border area in Shanxi. There are two special figures in the village: the superstitious Er Zhuge (played by Zhao Ziyue) and the mystical San Xian Gu (played by Zhou Ting). Er Zhuge’s son, Xiao Er Hei (played by Yang Jianye), is the militia captain, and San Xian Gu’s daughter, Xiao Qin (played by Yu Ping), is a member of the Women’s Rescue Society. The two grew up together and fell in love as adults. Their marriage is opposed by Er Zhuge, who checked the almanac and believes their fates are incompatible, while the lazy San Xian Gu thinks Xiao Er Hei's family is too poor and dreams of finding a wealthy and powerful suitor for Xiao Qin. The village head, Jin Wang (played by Ge Cunzhuang), usually abuses his power and, after failing to seduce Xiao Qin, harbors resentment and plots against her and Xiao Er Hei. San Xian Gu accepts a bride price from a bandit officer and insists that Xiao Qin marry him, but Xiao Qin refuses to comply. After learning the truth, District Chief (played by Li Million) punishes the malicious Jin Wang and approves the marriage of Xiao Er Hei and Xiao Qin... This film is adapted from the novel of the same name by Zhao Shuli.
