The twenty-episode television series "A Century of Xu Yun" is based on the life of Master Xu Yun, a modern Chinese Zen master known for his unwavering determination, arduous practice, and compassion for the world. In 1840, on a stormy night, the couple Xiao Yutang, the governor of Quanzhou, had a son, but instead, they bore a lump of flesh. Madam Xiao died in shock, and Xiao Yutang, filled with grief and anger, ordered a servant to dispose of the lump. An old medicine man appeared, cut open the birth sac, and a thunderous cry rang out—thus, Xu Yun came into the world, beginning his beloved path of cultivation that lasted for one hundred and twenty years, filled with forty-eight extraordinary experiences. This drama vividly presents the challenging yet fulfilling life of Master Xu Yun, showcasing his ability to endure difficulties for the Dharma and his selflessness. It recounts the legendary experiences of this rare monk through seven parts: leaving the dust to become a monk, the path to enlightenment, the journey westward during the Gengzi year, reviving Jishan, integrating Han and Tibetan Buddhism, protecting the nation with a Buddhist heart, and keeping the lamp of wisdom ever bright.
