"Lore" is the nickname of the protagonist Hannalore (played by Saskia Rosendahl) in the film. The story takes place in Germany shortly before the end of World War II. Lore is a girl born into privilege; her father is a high-ranking SS officer who has executed many Jews and innocent civilians in Belarus. Lore and her sisters know very little about the plight of the Jews, and she is even a proud member of the Hitler Youth, filled with admiration for Nazi ideology. Now, with Hitler dead and Germany reduced to ruins, Lore embarks on a painful and profound journey of coming of age. The film won four awards at the 2012 Stockholm Film Festival, including Best Film, Best Actress, Best Cinematography, and Best Original Score. It also received the Locarno Audience Award and the Best New Director award at the Valladolid Film Festival. It represented Australia for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 2013 Oscars.
