In an acting family, the eldest sister Hannah (Mia Farrow) has a husband, the agent Elliott (Michael Caine), who is infatuated with her younger sister Lee (Barbara Hershey). The second sister Holly (Dianne Wiest) has kicked her drug habit but is struggling with financial difficulties and is considering a way to make money. Meanwhile, Hannah's ex-husband, TV director Mickey (Woody Allen), is tormented by delusions of having a brain tumor and is hopelessly seeking medical help. The youngest sister Lee is involved with a reclusive painter, Frederick (Max von Sydow), who is her only confidant. Unable to resist his desires, Elliott ultimately has an affair with Lee, while Holly unexpectedly finds salvation in her career and love after a series of setbacks... Everyone surrounding this acting family is going through emotional and career upheavals.
