Before Ambassador Han (played by Tzi Ma) was dispatched to the United States, he had presided over the bust of a smuggling operation by the Zhong Tao crime syndicate, making him a target for vengeance. In the U.S., Zhong Tao instructs his men to kidnap Ambassador Han's daughter, Su-Young (played by Julia Hsu), and demands a ransom of 50 million dollars. The FBI learns of this and launches a full-scale investigation, but Ambassador Han, worried about the efficiency of the American side, insists on sending his old partner from Hong Kong, Inspector Lee (played by Jackie Chan), to assist. To hinder Lee from solving the case too quickly, the FBI assigns problematic detective Carter (played by Chris Tucker) from the Los Angeles Police Department as Lee's partner. Carter is flamboyant and showy, while Lee is exceptionally skilled and low-key, leading to many misunderstandings and laughs between this temporary pairing. However, as crises unfold, the two gradually develop a rapport. Will their rescue operation ultimately succeed? This film won the Best Actress Award (Elizabeth Peña) at the 1999 Latin Media Arts Awards and the Best On-Screen Team at the 1999 MTV Movie Awards.
