During the ten-year civil war, the Chinese Communist Party underground member Gong Weiping was tasked with developing the party organization within an independent battalion of the remnants of the Anti-Japanese Allied Army in Chahar. Due to the betrayal of a traitor, the 25 targets Gong Weiping identified were captured and faced imminent death. In an attempt to save the lives of the 25 soldiers, Gong Weiping voluntarily turned himself in, but he fell victim to a trick by the Zhongtong. Yu Xueyao, who was secretly in love with Gong Weiping, pleaded with her brother Yu Qinzhi, the deputy director of Zhongtong, to release Gong Weiping. Yu Qinzhi agreed to his sister's request in order to win over Gong Weiping and devised a series of traps.
At this time, Gong Weiping received a secret directive from his superior code-named Comrade Zhu Guang, ordering him to infiltrate the Zhongtong intelligence organization of the Kuomintang. To accomplish this special mission, Gong Weiping had to break up with his beloved girlfriend and marry Yu Xueyao. However, shortly after, Comrade Zhu Guang was killed in an accident, severing Gong Weiping's contact with the party organization, and the mission to infiltrate Zhongtong became just another secret no one knew. Faced with this reality, Gong Weiping resolutely chose an extremely difficult, tortuous, and painful path in life, changing his name to Gong Xiangguang to demonstrate his determination.
On his wedding night, he cleverly eliminated the traitors within the underground party and achieved merit in confrontations with Japanese agents. Yu Qinzhi, aware that Gong Xiangguang was still loyal to the party, set traps to force him into a position where he appeared to be a traitor in the eyes of the party organization. Gong Xiangguang was heartbroken but silently bore humiliation and contributed to the party to clear his name and fulfill his secret mission.
After the outbreak of the War of Resistance, Gong Xiangguang was transferred to the Zhongtong Weicheng Investigation Office as deputy director. At this time, his old classmate Qin Jian was the head of the CCP Weicheng Intelligence Department. Gong Xiangguang thought he could restore contact with the party, but he unexpectedly became a target for the underground party's anti-infiltration campaign. Despite the hostility and anti-infiltration actions from comrades, he worked tirelessly behind the scenes to assist the underground party in transporting a much-needed batch of important supplies to the border area. This made Qin Jian initially change his view of him and express willingness to accept an organizational investigation to clear Gong's unwarranted accusations. Qin Jian encouraged him to continue working for the party within enemy ranks.
Soon, Zhou Enlai passed through Weicheng. The head of the Weicheng military intelligence, Yan Kun, and Japanese agents attempted to assassinate him. Out of friendship from their teacher-student relationship with Zhou, the deputy commander of a certain military district, Bian Guolie, ordered intelligence chief Ouyang He and Gong Xiangguang to ensure Zhou’s safety. With Ouyang's assistance, Gong Xiangguang thwarted the assassination plot, allowing Zhou Enlai to leave Weicheng safely, and assisted the Eighth Route Army's office in uncovering an internal traitor, eliminating potential risks. Taking this opportunity, Gong Xiangguang requested to rejoin the organization but was disappointed.
At this point, an Eighth Route Army major general engaged in united front work within the Nationalist high command suddenly disappeared, leading Bian Guolie to instruct Gong Xiangguang to investigate. Gong Xiangguang captured the real culprit and cleverly provided evidence to the underground party, exposing Chiang Kai-shek's plot to the public. Afterwards, Gong Xiangguang requested to rejoin the party again, which plunged him into deep anguish.
The threat posed by the military intelligence to the Weicheng underground party's intelligence work became increasingly severe, and Gong Xiangguang repeatedly risked danger to save the underground party from peril. Due to Gong Xiangguang's special contributions, the underground party agreed to arrange for him to go to Yan'an to report his grievances, hoping to return to the party. Just as he was filled with joy, the situation in the border area suddenly changed, and the trip to Yan'an had to be postponed, putting Gong Xiangguang back in the throes of fate's mockery. However, during this period, he still eliminated the agents hiding within the underground party and helped complete one mission after another.
Not long after, Qin Jian, who best understood and trusted Gong Xiangguang, unfortunately, was captured and sacrificed. The hope for Gong Xiangguang to clear his name and return to the organization became exceedingly faint. In near despair, he once again found the strength to persevere through his steadfast belief in faith and unwavering pursuit.
Gong Xiangguang's actions in Weicheng were under the watchful eye of Zhongtong head Yu Qinzhi while he was also suspected by Zhongtong insiders and military intelligence agents. After Yu Qinzhi's secret attempts to test him failed, the military intelligence chief Yan Kun's report ultimately sent him to Chongqing prison. Just before Chiang Kai-shek issued the execution order, Ouyang He's full-scale rescue effort allowed him to be reborn.
Upon returning to Weicheng, Gong Xiangguang left the Zhongtong system and became an advisor under Bian Guolie. Ignoring personal safety, he cleverly transmitted military action plans from Hu Zongnan and Bian Guolie to attack Yan'an, making valuable contributions to the defense of the Party Center.
On the eve of Weicheng's liberation, he again skillfully obtained the complete list of agents' infiltration and sabotage plans, using internal conflicts within the enemy to thwart their conspiracy to damage important facilities and infiltrate before their escape.
After Gong Xiangguang's situation was reported to Yan'an, he was finally able to realize his long-standing wish of returning to the party's embrace after a central investigation and approval.
This film intertwines personal fate with the national liberation struggle, weaving together the personal emotions of joy and sorrow, humiliation, and burdens with the steadfast, unyielding pursuit of belief, presenting a gripping, suspenseful, grand, and captivating story, illustrating the special life of a member of the CCP underground party and showcasing the journey of a great soul.
