The film is adapted from Rachel Yoder's novel of the same name, which was nominated for the Pen/Hemingway Award. It tells the story of a newly minted mother and female artist who becomes increasingly lonely and anxious while caring for her child full-time. In her eyes, she has never been a mother, and now that she is one, she must become the happy one. After various efforts and attempts, she discovers that only by transforming into a "mother dog" can she fulfill this wish.
