Vendor Lu Yunsheng (played by Lue Lianggwei) often speaks up for his neighbors and is appreciated by the wife of the British Concession's chief detective Huang Jinrong (played by Zheng Zeshi), Sister Ah Gui (played by Siqin Gaowa). Soon, Lu uncovers the truth behind the assassination of Song Jiaoren, gaining considerable fame. Huang values Lu, but this triggers jealousy in Hou Fei. Lu and Huang mediate the incident where warlord Yuan Xiaojun hijacks French opium, making a fortune and becoming tycoons. Due to Huang mistakenly injuring the son of warlord Lu Yongxiang, Lu seeks mercy from Northeast Army commander Bi Shuzheng, also involving famous courtesan Lao Liu (played by Liu Jialing).
