His domineering, controlling mother helped to create one of the greatest British painters of the 20th century L.S. Lowry is one of the greatest national painters of 20th century Britain, and his unique style is beloved by the British public. However, his paintings were ridiculed by art critics early on as being the work of a child, as his characters had large heads and thin bodies, resembling matchsticks, and were referred to as "matchstick men." Although Lowry's mother, Elizabeth, constantly obstructed his artistic career throughout her life, his success as a painter can undoubtedly be attributed to her. After the death of his father, Lowry was responsible for caring for his bedridden mother, often waiting until she fell asleep before starting to paint in the attic, wholeheartedly and willingly. The melancholic Elizabeth always expressed her dissatisfaction and disappointment with her son, yet Lowry spent his entire life striving to make his mother happy; both his life and his paintings yearned for her approval. This film is directed by the renowned former director of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Adrian Noble, featuring Cannes Best Actor Timothy Spall as the great painter, and Cannes Best Actress Vanessa Redgrave as his controlling mother. The superb performances of both actors bring this ironic yet humorous mother-son relationship to life. "With chimneys towering and sky filled with black smoke, the matchstick man appears, walking alone in an unchanging industrial landscape." Lowry's works document the post-industrial landscapes of British cities and the alienation of people, a theme that still resonates today. In his later years, he was invited by the Royal Academy of Arts and Manchester College, and his works have sold for high prices of up to £3.7 million. He repeatedly declined medals awarded by the British Prime Minister and refused a title of nobility.
