In the late Cultural Revolution, on a riverboat traveling from Chongqing to Wuhan, several people with their own secrets share the same cabin: poet Qiu Shi (Li Zhixing), who has been imprisoned for six years on unfounded charges, is secretly escorted by special agents Liu Wenying (Zhang Yu) and Li Yan (Qiang Ming), with a perilous journey ahead; an elderly woman (Ouyang Ruqiu) boards the ship to mourn her only son who died in a violent clash; rural girl Xinghua is forced to "sell herself to pay off debts" and tearfully thinks of her beloved... Due to Liu Wenying and Li Yan presenting themselves as "typical revolutionary young troops" and shrewd schemers respectively, they are not well-received by the others.
