In the late Cultural Revolution, on a riverboat traveling from Chongqing to Wuhan, several people with their own secrets share the same cabin: poet Qiu Shi (Li Zhixing), who has been imprisoned for six years on unfounded charges, is secretly escorted by special agents Liu Wenying (Zhang Yu) and Li Yan (Qiang Ming), with a perilous journey ahead; an elderly woman (Ouyang Ruqiu) boards the ship to mourn her only son who died in a violent clash; rural girl Xinghua is forced to "sell herself to pay off debts" and tearfully thinks of her beloved... Due to Liu Wenying and Li Yan presenting themselves as "typical revolutionary young troops" and shrewd schemers respectively, they are not well-received by the others. Additionally, a little girl sneaks onto the boat unnoticed. Xinghua's tragic plight infuriates everyone, but they are powerless to help, and the elderly woman's strength does not inspire her. Later, she jumps into the river to end her life, but Qiu Shi saves her and recounts his love story with Liu Gu (Zhao Jing), which rekindles Xinghua's courage to live. Having already placed life and death aside, Qiu Shi does not expect that his life will once again see a spark of hope: the police officer Lao Wang (Zhong Xinghuo) gains the little girl's trust; she is on the boat to find her father, and based on the evidence she provides, Lao Wang deduces that she is Qiu Shi's daughter. While everyone fears for Qiu Shi's safety, Liu Wenying, feeling a pang of conscience, decides to unconditionally extend a helping hand to the father and daughter.
