The film is a remake of the classic 1973 prison escape movie of the same name starring Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman. It tells the story of Henri, a professional pickpocket played by Charlie Hunnam, who is framed for the murder of a pimp and is sent to a prison in French Guiana, surrounded by the sea. Due to a butterfly tattoo on his chest, his fellow inmates call him "Papillon." From the day he enters the prison, Papillon plans his escape, but escaping requires money to bribe the guards and to purchase a boat for fleeing.
