Barton (played by John Turturro) is a talented screenwriter in New York whose script has just received recognition on Broadway, bringing a wave of good fortune. A Hollywood film company invites him to write a B-movie script about wrestling, so Barton arrives in Hollywood. He rents a room in a dilapidated hotel to begin his writing, but unfortunately, inspiration eludes him, and he descends into a state of deep anguish.
