In the 1870s, a remote village in northern Denmark. Two sisters of the Lutheran faith, Martine (played by Birgitte Federspiel) and Filippe (played by Bodil Kjer), live a secluded life, dedicating themselves to religious service under the guidance of their father, a pastor, sacrificing love in the process. The kind-hearted sisters take in a woman named Babette (played by Stéphane Audran) who has fled from Paris. Mysterious Babette turns out to be a renowned chef from a French restaurant. Fortune smiles upon Babette as she wins a substantial lottery prize of 10,000 francs, and to express her gratitude towards the sisters, she decides to personally cook a lavish and authentic French dinner for the villagers on the anniversary of their father's death. This film is based on the novella by Danish author Isak Dinesen, and it won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film at the 60th Oscars in 1988, as well as the Catholic Jury Prize at the 40th Cannes Film Festival in 1987, and a nomination for Best Foreign Language Film at the 46th Golden Globe Awards in 1989.
