In 1970s China, educated youth Luo Ming (played by Chen Kun) and Ma Jianling (played by Liu Ye) are sent to a small village in Xiangxi for re-education by the poor peasants. However, the impoverished rural life gradually bores them. They encounter a lively and cheerful little seamstress (played by Zhou Xun), who brings light to their stagnant existence. They also discover a box of so-called "forbidden books," and from then on, their only joy in life becomes secretly reading the novels of Balzac found in the box. The forbidden books open up a new world of fantasy for the youth and the little seamstress, and slowly both of them fall in love with her. Their romantic feelings burn ever more intensely...
