The story takes place in the bustling, vibrant metropolis of Paris. A boy from the countryside comes to seek his brother George (played by Thierry Neuvic), but is locked out because he doesn't know the code to his brother's apartment. At that moment, George's girlfriend Ann (played by Juliette Binoche) appears and lets the boy into the apartment. The boy treats the beggar Maria (played by Luminita Gheorghiu) roughly and faces harsh criticism from a black teacher, Amadou (played by Ona Lu Yenke). Soon after, the police arrive and end up arresting Maria and Amadou. As a result, Maria returns to her hometown in Romania to reunite with her husband Douglas (played by Bob Nicolescu). Next door to Ann lives an abused child who seeks help from her, leaving Ann unsure of what to do. The people captured on screen, each have their own story.
