Esmeralda is a lively and passionate gypsy girl, whose kind nature has won her much admiration and affection. The priest Claude of Notre Dame has long coveted Esmeralda's beauty and finally, unable to resist, sends his ugly henchman Quasimodo to forcibly abduct Esmeralda to Notre Dame. However, midway, the handsome and brave Captain Phoebus appears, and Esmeralda falls in love with him at first sight. Phoebus is attacked by masked assailants, and Esmeralda is unexpectedly blamed as the culprit. Esmeralda is sentenced to death by hanging, and before her execution, Quasimodo rescues her from captivity and hides her in Notre Dame. At first, Esmeralda is wary of Quasimodo, but as time goes by, she gradually realizes that beneath Quasimodo's ugly exterior lies a heart of gold.
