Eilis (played by Saoirse Ronan) leaves her hometown, her mother, and her sister to seek more opportunities and a broader future in America. With the help of Father Fred (played by Jim Broadbent), Eilis becomes a salesgirl, and her outstanding performance and relentless effort lead her to gain the recognition and approval of her supervisor, Miss Fortini (played by Jessica Paré). Soon after, Eilis meets a boy named Tony (played by Emory Cohen), and sparks of love ignite between them. An unexpected event brings Eilis back to her hometown, where her mother's various actions make her realize that her mother wants her to stay here, by her side.
