The story begins with an unnamed writer (played by Jude Law) who, to focus on his creation, arrives at a hotel called "The Grand Budapest." Here, he meets the hotel's owner, Monsieur Gustave H. (played by F. Murray Abraham), who invites the writer to dinner and recounts the storied past and present of this legendary hotel. The former owner of the hotel was named Gustave (played by Ralph Fiennes), while the young Mustafa (played by Tony Revolori) was merely a humble bellboy at the time. Gustave was principled and astute, and under his management, The Grand Budapest Hotel became the premier resort of its day. Gustave fell in love with the elderly Madame D. (played by Tilda Swinton) and, upon her death, she bequeathed him a priceless painting in her will, an act that enraged her son Dimitri (played by Adrien Brody), setting off a chain of events that would lead to the misfortunes of The Grand Budapest Hotel and Gustave.
