Patterson (played by Adam Driver) lives in Patterson, New Jersey, the same-named city as his hometown. He is a bus driver who leads a simple cohabitation life with his girlfriend Laura (played by Golshifteh Farahani) and a bulldog, repeating the same route every day and living a monotonous life. Patterson enjoys writing poetry and carries a notebook with him to jot down the verses that come to his mind, but he has never considered publishing his poetry; his only reader is Laura. Contrary to Patterson, Laura is a natural artist with a mind filled with whimsical ideas every day. She paints various black and white totems on curtains, walls, and even her own clothes, learns guitar, and bakes delicious cupcakes. Optimistic and cheerful, she wholeheartedly loves life. Eventually, Patterson agrees to let Laura print his works; will his life change because of this?
