At nearly forty, Guryev meets the young woman Anna, who has a dog, by the Black Sea in Yalta. After a week of interaction, Guryev wins Anna's affection and they begin a passionate romance. A few days later, Anna receives news of her husband's illness and rushes back to City C, while Guryev returns to Moscow, living a mundane life with his wife, who is ten years older than him.
