In a future where times are unclear, a girl named Lily drives through the wilderness, seemingly amidst a brutal war between the sexes. To escape the male encirclement, Lily abandons her car and ventures deeper into the wild. She crosses a desolate plain and arrives at a strange mansion. The owner is an old woman who can talk to animals, and surprisingly, Lily can understand the animals as well. Inside the house, there is a mysterious unicorn. Outside, Lily encounters a pair of incestuous siblings, later joining a group of naked children to sow seeds and play together. The war is getting closer, and everyone engages in a frenzied chase. Inside the mansion, a giant eagle, seemingly flown out of a painting, brings fear and mystery to a few people, ultimately being killed by the sibling pair. The old woman eventually dies, and Lily offers her breasts to the unicorn. This is a film imbued with ambiguous meaning and mysticism, as if it describes a story occurring in another world. The filmmaking technique is akin to surrealism's "automatic writing," reminiscent of Buñuel and Dalí's work in "Un Chien Andalou." Although Louis Malle considers the filmmaking process of this film a pleasurable memory, he finds it difficult to label it as his "masterpiece." Similarly, critics have been reticent about this hard-to-categorize and evaluate film, rarely delving into its depths and being reluctant to dismiss it easily.
