The city of Timbuktu in Mali, under the control of religious extremists, suffers daily persecution from jihadists, with "half of the land occupied by invaders." Women are the primary victims. By telling the story of Kidane, Fatima, their daughter Toya, and Issan, as well as their small farm, Abderrahmane Sissako opposes the terrorism in a region "ignored by the media and the whole world." This director captures the "silent resistance of male and female civilians" in the Sahel region that he loves, thereby exposing the reality.
