Set in 1973, the story follows young Beth as she leaves her rural Southern home to attend New York University. Her beloved uncle Frank is a respected literature professor, and Beth soon discovers that Frank is gay and has been living with his long-term partner Wally, a secret he has kept for years. When Frank's father/Beth's grandfather suddenly passes away, Frank must return home for the funeral and ultimately confront a buried trauma he has spent his entire adult life avoiding.
