In the traditional trading town of Porto in the mid-19th century, the proud wealthy young man Augusto, a friend of writer Camilo, falls in love with Fanny, the young daughter of a British officer. After facing obstacles and several breakups, they finally get married. However, after the marriage, Augusto neglects Fanny due to her correspondence with Camilo. Subsequently, Fanny falls ill with tuberculosis and descends into death during the oppressive solitude of her married life. Augusto, suffering from the trials of fate, soon follows in Fanny's footsteps. This film is Oliveira's magnum opus, telling the story of destructive love among the nobility during a time of social upheaval, with a bold static style and the unique aesthetic persona of the noble male.
