An elderly woman named Vera at a nursing home rolls down the stairs in her wheelchair and dies instantly. Her caregiver, Dolores (played by Kathy Bates), stands nearby with a weapon in hand. Dolores is the sole suspect. It turns out that she has been Vera’s maid for 40 years, and after suffering years of mistreatment and perverse demands from her employer, this case easily leads to a narrative of revenge-fueled murder. The police are eager to convict her, aiming for a 20-year sentence. This case disturbs Dolores's daughter, Selina (played by Jennifer Jason Leigh), who is a journalist working in New York. She personally gets involved in the investigation, reuniting with her estranged mother after many years, and they live together for a few days. This forces her to recall dark memories, while Dolores frequently reminisces about her daughter’s childhood. Meanwhile, a demonic figure from her past is awakened in her memories: her husband, who frequently abused her. In a moment of unbearable pain, she makes a final stand...
