After their parents went to the city to work, nine-year-old Kai Kai is taken care of by his grandfather as he goes to school and lives. Kai Kai picked up a stray dog and named it Xiao Dan Er. Xiao Dan Er is particularly timid and usually doesn't dare to bark; the grandfather thinks it's a mute dog. Xiao Dan Er is very clever, doing whatever Kai Kai asks it to do, following Kai Kai step for step, afraid of getting lost again. Xiao Dan Er became Kai Kai's best friend. The grandfather has pulmonary heart disease, which has financially burdened the family. To afford medication, he even stopped paying for cable TV. With nothing to do after school, Kai Kai's grandfather encouraged him to read lessons. Today's lessons to read, yesterday's lessons to consolidate, and tomorrow's lessons to preview. The grandfather doesn't care if Kai Kai reads correctly or not, he just wants to keep Kai Kai occupied. Whenever Kai Kai reads, Xiao Dan Er sits on the grandfather's shoes and listens attentively. The teacher started to praise Kai Kai, saying he reads well and writes good essays, and that he will definitely be able to go to graduate school or even pursue a PhD in the future. Kai Kai became more motivated to study, reading extracurricular material after finishing the textbooks, completing readings from Yue Fei to the Three Kingdoms. One day, Xiao Dan Er suddenly barked and tugged at the hem of Kai Kai's pants, pulling him towards the grandfather's room. Kai Kai rushed over, only to find his grandfather lying on the bed without any breath. Kai Kai's parents returned to bury the grandfather and wanted to take Kai Kai to the city. Kai Kai didn't want to go, saying that Wu Meifang from his class had gone to the city for six months without finding a school and returned just days ago. Kai Kai wanted to study and didn't want to go to the city. Kai Kai's father worked in the city and lived in a workers' shed. His mother worked as a nanny and lived at the employer's house. If Kai Kai went to the city, he would truly have no place to stay. The conditions for studying in the city were too underdeveloped, but it was manageable in the countryside. Kai Kai learned to cook from his grandfather and could make steamed buns and noodles, so eating and dressing were no issue. What worried Kai Kai's parents the most was that in case he fell ill at night, there would be no one to help him. So, Kai Kai's father went to find his teacher. Teacher Wang said that during the day, Kai Kai could eat by himself, and at night he could sleep at the teacher's house, resolving the issues. Leaving a nine-year-old child at home, others might not say anything, but Kai Kai's mother herself couldn't bear it. She said, let's take the child away, otherwise, I'll stay back. Kai Kai's father said it wasn't that they didn't want to take him, but that he didn't want to go. Besides, studying is a lifelong matter; if they delayed the child, they would regret it forever. Kai Kai's parents began preparing all his living necessities and explaining everything one by one, quietly returning to the city one morning. When Kai Kai woke up and found his parents missing, he ran to the village entrance and cried out, beginning his independent life. Without his grandfather, Kai Kai was distracted while cooking, often burning the food, and was always late for class. Later, he simply stopped cooking and shared steamed buns with Xiao Dan Er, eating pickles and drinking cold water. Teacher Wang had a big black dog named Da Hei. When Kai Kai took Xiao Dan Er to Teacher Wang's house to sleep, Da Hei kept barking, scaring Xiao Dan Er to hide under the bed and not come out. Kai Kai felt sorry for Xiao Dan Er and told the teacher he couldn't sleep there and wanted to go home instead. With Teacher Wang's permission, Kai Kai took Xiao Dan Er home. One night, Kai Kai had a nightmare and woke up terrified, calling his dad. His dad asked, "Aren't you sleeping at the teacher's house? Why are you back again? It's already three in the morning, why aren't you asleep? Are you scared?" Upon hearing his dad's questions, Kai Kai cried. With no other choice, his dad spent some money to arrange for the conditions needed for Kai Kai to go to the city. Kai Kai was going to the city. The night before going to the city, Kai Kai emptied his backpack and tried to fit Xiao Dan Er in it; it fit perfectly. Kai Kai said to Xiao Dan Er, "I’m taking you to the city. Are you happy?" The next morning, father and son took Xiao Dan Er to the bus station at the village entrance. Just as they were about to board, his dad suddenly said they wouldn't be taking Xiao Dan Er along, saying he'd buy a better one in the city. Kai Kai disagreed. His dad said they don't sell dog tickets on the train; they won't let a dog on board. Kai Kai still disagreed. His dad got angry, said Kai Kai was being disobedient, pried Kai Kai's hand open, threw away the dog leash, and forcibly carried Kai Kai onto the bus. As the bus drove away, Kai Kai resisted his dad while crying out for Xiao Dan Er to run fast, saying, "I’ll wait for you up ahead." Xiao Dan Er desperately ran after the bus but got further and further away.
