The introverted Polish youth Trelkovsky (played by Roman Polanski) arrives in Paris, hoping to rent an apartment. The previous tenant, Simon Schön (played by Romain Bouteille), committed suicide by jumping from a window for reasons unknown. After Simon dies in the hospital, Trelkovsky smoothly becomes the new tenant. The joy of moving does not bring him much happiness; the oppressive atmosphere around him constantly disturbs his nerves. Many rigid and dull residents inhabit this old apartment, and they complain about Trelkovsky making too much noise and conspire to ostracize him from other tenants... This poor young man, despite his cautious approach, is slowly pushed to the brink by them. Trelkovsky begins to realize the reasons behind Simon Schön's suicide, and he simultaneously discovers that he, too, is being led to a devastating end by this group of strange tenants...
