In Vienna, a young American woman attempts suicide and is sent to the hospital. A detective suspects that the incident is due to the misconduct of her lover—a professor of psychology from America. While the doctors strive to save her, the detective interrogates the professor. Through flashbacks, the woman's past unfolds, revealing her overdose, her tumultuous relationship with the professor, her alcoholism and promiscuity, and her estrangement from her husband.
