The story begins in 1937 in Beiping, amidst the chaos of war, when Tonghua (played by Xie Yue) and Gucheng (played by Wang Xiaoyang) are born. Tonghua is a young lady from a royal family raised in seclusion, unaware of the tremendous changes happening in the world just a wall away. Gucheng, on the other hand, lost his parents at an early age and lives a solitary life, having experienced the coldness and warmth of human interactions, making him a true wild child. Fate brings Tonghua and Gucheng together; despite their contrasting personalities, they are drawn to each other. Gucheng's parents' revolutionary comrade, Luo Qiu, finds him and takes him in. Gucheng begins to live under the same roof with Luo Qiu's son, Luo Shuanzi (played by Qian Bo). Later, Luo Qiu sends Gucheng to school, where he befriends Wang Xiaoyong (played by Ding Ding). Coincidentally, Wang Xiaoyong's parents and Gucheng's parents are also old acquaintances.
