Disabled from the waist down due to injuries sustained in battle, former Navy warrior Jake Sully (played by Sam Worthington) decides to take his deceased brother's place on Pandora, controlling an "Avatar," a hybrid being created by Dr. Grace (played by Sigourney Weaver) that merges human DNA with that of the local Na'vi tribe. Jake's goal is to infiltrate the Na'vi tribe and diplomatically persuade them to voluntarily leave their ancestral home, allowing SecFor Corporation to clear-cut the ancient forests and mine the expensive and "unobtainium" resources beneath the ground. During his exploration of Pandora, Jake encounters the Na'vi princess Neytiri (played by Zoe Saldana), from whom he learns survival skills and attitudes towards nature. Meanwhile, SecFor's manager and military representative Colonel Miles (played by Stephen Lang) gradually loses patience and decides to resort to force to drive the Na'vi away... This film is shot in 3D technology and cost a total of $500 million to produce and distribute, making it the most expensive film in history. The film won three Academy Awards at the 82nd Oscars for Best Cinematography, Best Visual Effects, and Best Art Direction.
