A city occupied by foreign troops suffers from food shortages, making life difficult for its people. A young woman has no choice but to take her twin sons to live with their grandmother in the countryside. This "grandmother" is illiterate, dirty, stingy, cruel, and even a murderer. The two brothers grow up in this harsh environment, training their survival skills daily by hitting and scolding each other, as well as starving themselves. They carefully document the events of each day in a large notebook. As the pages of the diary are turned, a cruel nightmare-like parable gradually unfolds.
