On Christmas Eve in 1970, pregnant prostitute Isabel (played by Penélope Cruz) is about to give birth. In a desperate attempt, the madam risks her life to stop a car, resulting in Isabel giving birth to a son, whom she names Victor. Twenty years later, Victor falls in love with a girl named Elena, who has an affair with him, but she stands him up for their date. Furious, Victor visits her, only to be threatened by Elena, who is high and armed. As they reach a stalemate, police officers Sancho and David (played by Javier Bardem) happen to pass by. Previously, a drunken Sancho was confiding to a colleague about his wife's infidelity. In the confrontation, David gets shot by Victor, resulting in his paralysis. Victor is subsequently imprisoned. Six years later, after serving his sentence, Victor sees the disabled athlete David on television, who represents the Spanish team at the 1992 Barcelona Paralympics and wins a gold medal in basketball. Victor seeks revenge on David but ends up becoming a colleague of David's wife, leading to an astonishing secret behind these misfortunes…
