On Christmas Eve in 1970, pregnant prostitute Isabel (played by Penélope Cruz) is about to give birth. In a desperate attempt, the madam risks her life to stop a car, resulting in Isabel giving birth to a son, whom she names Victor. Twenty years later, Victor falls in love with a girl named Elena, who has an affair with him, but she stands him up for their date.
