The film is based on true events. It tells the story of real incidents in the history of the Black Panther Party in 1960s America, focusing on the death of Hampton, who was killed in 1969 during a raid conducted by the Chicago Police Department and the FBI. The police fired 80 shots, while members of the Black Panther Party fired only one shot, which was from a member whose muscle contracted after being shot by the police. Hampton was shot twice in the head at close range while he was sleeping with his pregnant fiancée; he had been drugged that night and did not hear any of the police activity. After his death, his body was dragged into an alley, and he was just 21 years old. After an investigation, his death was ruled as "justifiable homicide," and later, in 1982, a settlement of $1.85 million was reached in a civil lawsuit.
