In Edinburgh, Scotland, three young men, Renton (played by Ewan McGregor), Spud (played by Ewen Bremner), and Sick Boy (played by Jonny Lee Miller), live a chaotic and decadent life, engaging in drug use, promiscuity, and scams. During their reckless indulgence of youth, drugs become the source of all evil. Renton has a love-hate relationship with them, trying to quit but ultimately falling back into addiction. After a wild night of partying, one of them is involved in the death of a baby born to a girl named Alison (played by Susan Vidler). This sets off a chain of nightmares. Spud gets imprisoned for robbery, Renton is hospitalized due to a drug overdose and is forcibly detoxed. Terrifying hallucinations and underlying fears force him to sever ties with drugs. It seems like a fresh start, but old friends like Begbie (played by Robert Carlyle) come back into his life, bringing more trouble... This film is adapted from the novel of the same name by Irvine Welsh,
