Mussolini's new town Sabaudia is filled with a decadent atmosphere, where Elio (played by Elio Germano) lives with his brother Mariko (played by Riccardo Scamarcio) in the remnants of brick and tile buildings. Elio is an untimely rebel who joins the new Fascist MSI party against the opposition of his parents and brother. Mariko is a leftist. The film portrays the social background of the town through the ideological conflict between the two brothers, reflecting the political and social situation of the time. It also depicts the social traumas and lifestyle of Italy in the 1960s and 1970s.
The brother, shining like a dazzling star, captivates supporters with his charm on the leftist stage; while the protagonist, originally retreating to a seminary, gives up the opportunity to connect with God under the ‘disturbance’ caused by the provocative photos of a star that his brother brought. Through the changes in brotherhood, romance, and family relationships, the film sketches the history of Italy over the past two decades. The screenplay is written by the same person who penned "Radiant Times", though slightly more concise, maintaining the same passion and twists.
