Famous British journalist David Locke (played by Jack Nicholson) travels to North Africa to interview local rebel guerrillas, but due to a language barrier, he is unable to reach their camp. Upon returning to his hotel, Locke discovers that a businessman he met on the plane, Robinson, has died. Their similar appearances prompt Locke to suddenly decide to swap identities with Robinson, and so Locke's death is reported back home. Initially detached, his wife Rachel, who is in a cooling phase of their relationship, soon begins to long for her husband. Meanwhile, Locke uses Robinson's identity to make connections and discovers that the businessman was secretly involved in arms trading with the North African guerrillas. As Locke makes his way to Spain, a British producer contacts Rachel to prepare for a film about Locke, and Rachel shows a keen interest in Robinson, suggesting the crew search for him. In Spain, Locke meets a girl studying architecture (played by Maria Schneider), and they wander together while evading the British search. This identity game takes them further and further... The film won multiple awards, including Best European Film at the 1976 Bodil Awards in Denmark.
