In 1926, in a cotton field in Georgia, a young Cecil witnesses the murder of his father by a plantation owner, which forever casts a shadow of racial discrimination in his heart. By the late 1950s, Cecil Gaines (played by Forest Whitaker), who has been navigating Washington, accidentally gains the favor of the White House Chief of Staff and is appointed to serve in the dining services at the nation's political center. He remembers his boss’s teachings, reads the room, and blends into the background. Over the years, Cecil serves presidents who have each made their mark in American history, including Eisenhower (played by Robin Williams), Kennedy (played by James Marsden), Johnson (played by Liev Schreiber), Nixon (played by John Cusack), and Reagan (played by Alan Rickman). Surrounding the struggle for civil rights for Black Americans, he experiences unforgettable moments with the presidents, his family, and his fellow people… This film is inspired by the true story of Eugene Allen, the White House Chief Butler.
