Gui Mei (Yang Huishan) arrives alone in Taiwan from Nanjing in search of her fiancé but to no avail. She temporarily stays at her cousin's house, where she is treated like a servant. To escape this dependent life, she marries the middle-aged man Hou Yongnian (Li Liqiun), who was abandoned by his wife, becoming the stepmother of three children. However, due to Hou Yongnian's gambling addiction and extramarital affairs, she finds herself once again in a perilous situation. After giving birth to children, Gui Mei works alongside Hou Yongnian in Japan as domestic help to support their family. Fortune smiles upon her when she learns excellent cooking skills at a local Chinese restaurant and returns to Taiwan to independently open the "Xia Fei Zhi Jia" restaurant. Yet, while she is frugal and diligent, Hou Yongnian falls back into his old ways. What breaks her heart even more is the selfishness and cruelty of her accomplished adult children and their spouses.
