Tom Haywe is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, and by 1983, he was one of the longest-serving Marines. He had participated in the Korean War and the Vietnam War, earning a Medal of Honor at Heartbreak Ridge during the Korean War. The elite first platoon required the second platoon to cooperate in military training, and Haywe's task was to enforce discipline in the second platoon.
