Tom Haywe is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, and by 1983, he was one of the longest-serving Marines. He had participated in the Korean War and the Vietnam War, earning a Medal of Honor at Heartbreak Ridge during the Korean War. The elite first platoon required the second platoon to cooperate in military training, and Haywe's task was to enforce discipline in the second platoon. He contemptuously referred to the new recruits in the second platoon as "ladies," while the defiant recruits often made him lose face. Haywe's personal life was also troubled: his wife Aji, who worked as a hostess near the barracks, divorced him, and he wanted to reconcile with her but was firmly rebuffed. Unhappy, Haywe got into an argument with his ex-wife's new boyfriend and the female owner of a movie download service. During the exercise, the second platoon, trained by Haywe, defeated the first platoon, earning respect from the soldiers. Later, Haywe led the second platoon in successfully rescuing American citizens trapped in Grenada, receiving a warm welcome upon his triumphant return, at which point Aji, having had a change of heart, reconciled with Haywe.
