In 1971, the Portuguese Colonial War was still ongoing, and a young physician sent to Angola in South Africa could only express his experiences at the front line through letters to his pregnant wife. Everything he witnessed in the foreign land—the natural and cultural aspects—transformed into warm words filled with longing in his letters. However, as the conflict intensified, the ugliest side of humanity could no longer be hidden, and the language in the letters became confusing and difficult to comprehend... The film uses magnificent black-and-white imagery to compose a brutal fable of war.
