In 1942, during the height of World War II, Japan was unstoppable across various battlefields in Asia. In the tropical jungles of Java, a Japanese POW camp stood where Army Captain Yonoi (played by Ryuichi Sakamoto) and Sergeant Major Ōhara (played by Takeshi Kitano) jointly managed the facility. Ōhara was rough in manner and ruthless; he showed no mercy to European and American prisoners of war, and was especially cruel to those with homosexual tendencies. In contrast, the handsome Yonoi appeared much more gentlemanly. British Army Major Jack (played by David Bowie) was charming and attractive, and his first appearance stirred feelings in Yonoi. In the prisoner camp where homosexual relations were common, many emotions ran unchecked. In the ensuing days, the two men found themselves caught between national loyalties and personal feelings, struggling with painful and brutal turmoil within themselves... This film is adapted from the novel by British author Laurence van der Post and won the Best Film Audience Award at the 1984 Kinema Junpo Awards, as well as five other awards including Best Director, Best Film, Best Score, Best Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actor (Takeshi Kitano).
